I just made up a large batch of these cards for the November birthdays at church. It turns out that the number of November birthdays is relatively small (at least at our church) so this batch of cards will cover at least some of December, too. Frequently I try to do a card that incorporates seasonal elements but I didn’t this time around. I had a suspicion that some of the cards would be sent in December, and it just feels weird to have a leafy, autumnal theme for December birthdays. I also know some people that have December birthdays and they’ve recounted stories about their birthday being eclipsed by Christmas. So I know that a very clear, birthday-only card is the best choice in December. Which is a very long backstory for the choices I made for this card.
After I started assembling the cards I realized that the center embossed panel has a scalloped look in addition to the scallop pattern of the DSP. It wasn’t intentional, but I like how they look together. Sometimes there’s some serendipity in the creative process!
A couple of the elements on this card are not currently available. I love shopping my stash for the church card ministry; it makes me feel good that I’m able to make use of these older products that are taking up storage space. This time I used an old pack of patterned paper and a stamp from a past Paper Pumpkin kit. These things never go bad and I hope that the recipients like the cheerful colors and patterns.
This card sketch was the design inspiration for my card. I moved the focal element from the top 1/3 spot to be at the bottom 1/3 spot instead. That’s the cool thing about sketches – you can reinterpret them to meet your needs.
