I created this card almost a year ago and I’ve had it sitting there in a stack just waiting to post. I made this during an online class that I took last April. Yep, it really has been that long!

I love how this card features the Layers of Beauty bundle on the front and with a small flower inside (see below). This large hero image really does make the card without having to do a lot of work. However, you can see that this isn’t a standard card base. This picket fence background looks tricky, but it actually isn’t that hard to make. Here is a picture of the inside of the card which gives a little bit of a view of the front on the inside.

To create the picket fence the card base dimensions start typical and then change during the creation. Let me attempt to describe:

  • Card base: 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
  • Cut away 3 1/2″ from the card front so that there is a small flap on the front
  • From the 3 1/2″ piece cut 4 pieces that are 3/4″ x 5 1/2″; you will have 1/2″ left over
  • Fold and burnish the score in the card base
  • Use the card base to line up one of the 3/4″ strips with the right edge of the card front
  • Evenly space the remaining 3/4″ strips evenly between the edge strips
  • You can use washi tape or some other low-tack tape to keep the strips in place until they are secured with the fence cross strips
  • Cut four 3/8″ x 4 1/4″ strips and two 5/8″ x 4 1/4″ strips; these are the horizontal strips for the front and inside of the card
  • Apply a dot of liquid glue approximately 1/2″ from the top and bottom edges of the picket fence strips
  • Adhere 3/8″ horizontal strips across the top and bottom of the picket fence
  • Using the same approach adhere a 5/8″ horizontal strip across the middle of the picket fence card front
  • Open the card and adhere horizontal strips to match the ones attached on the front; these add strength to the card base
  • Decorate to finish the card

Hopefully I’ve explained it well enough so you can make your own picket fence card. It really is a fun technique and great for a background behind a large floral or leafy image. I encourage you to experiment and try it out. Happy crafting!
