I created this card three months ago during an online crafting event. It’s a very simple card with clean lines and no embellishments which allows the background layer to shine as the star. This was created using the wax paper resist technique which I haven’t done in years. I was so glad for the trip in the way-back machine because it’s such a cool effect. I’ll describe how to do it in just a moment. The thing that I love about this technique is that it reminds me of batik fabric, which is one of my absolute favorite types of fabric. I have used it a lot in various quilts that I’ve created over the years.

To create this patterned cardstock you need a few household items: wax paper, a clothes iron, and a sheet of regular printer/copy paper. You also need a couple of stamping supplies – an embossing folder, ink pad(s) and blending brush(es). Here are the directions:

  • Cut 2 pieces of Basic White cardstock 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″
  • Cut wax paper the size of the embossing folder
  • Place the wax paper in the embossing folder and run it through your die cutting machine
  • Place the embossed wax paper between the 2 pieces of Basic White cardstock
  • Fold the printer/copy paper in half
  • Place the white cardstock/wax paper/white cardstock sandwich in the folded copy paper
    • make sure that the wax paper doesn’t extend beyond the copy paper
  • Turn on the clothes iron to the cotton setting, without steam
  • When the iron is hot, iron the printer/copy paper for about 30 seconds, moving the iron around to get all part of the cardstock inside
  • Let cool a couple of minutes then separate the wax paper from the 2 pieces of cardstock
  • Using blending brushes and ink, color the white cardstock
    • As you apply ink the pattern from the embossing folder will appear
    • There will be subtle differences between the two pieces of cardstock because they are patterned by the 2 sides of the embossing folder
  • You will have 2 pieces of patterned cardstock that you can use on 2 projects

I hope you’ll give this technique a try! It’s a lot of fun and you can create the perfect background in any color. I’m so glad that I was reminded of this fun technique!
