balloon_celebration_CAS_362Who knew?!? Today is Rick Astley’s birthday. That’s right, the singer that inspired the whole “Rick Rolled” phenomenon is turning 50 today. I’m sure he doesn’t need a birthday card from me, but who knows – maybe he would appreciate a handmade card to mark the day.

Actually, I created this card to participate in a “Clean and Simple” challenge that is currently active on Splitcoaststampers. I thought I would look a bit further afield to find challenges that are current to participate in. There is a whole topic on the Splitcoast forums that is dedicated to a weekly challenge for CAS cards. This week, the challenge is to create a birthday card using purple. Well – how easy is that?!? I had purchased this fantastic balloon set from the Occasions catalog and it hadn’t yet seen some ink surprise, and I immediately wanted to use it for this challenge. I added a die cut for “cheers” and used another stamp set for the greeting  – voilà! This is a card that was designed in my brain very quickly; I experimented a bit with the colors to use for the various pieces to get a good balance. I added some blue balloons to add a bit of color balance so it isn’t quite so overwhelmingly PURPLE.

I want to point out a couple of things on this card that may not be so obvious from the picture. To make the “cheers” diecut pop a bit more I cut out three of them and glued them together to make it a bit thicker and give it a little bit of oomph. I also added some white sequins around the greeting for some visual interest. And lastly – the touch that is not at all visible in the photo – I added highlights on the left side of the balloons using the new GO-JUSS clear Wink Of Stella. It’s a subtle glitter effect but it really adds a special sumthin’ sumthin’ to this card.
