I created this card to participate in a card layout challenge. It was actually a pretty easy challenge – have a circular opening on a top layer and focal image that shows through the circle window. The challenge designer shared multiple designs that she created to spark our creativity. She used stamps for the focal image on 2 cards and on a third she used a piece of the gorgeous Thoughtful Journey patterned paper. I stepped up my card in a couple of ways from the way that she did hers:
- I created a frame to go around the outside of my circle window. It was very easy to do with the Deckled Circles dies; I just used the die that I used for the window and the next larger die. I cut them at the same time because it is much simpler to make sure that the inner circle is centered in the outer circle.
- I added a matted layer that is flush on the card base, and the top layer with the circle window is 1/8″ smaller than the matted layer.
- The layer with the window is popped up from the greeting and the matted layer with Dimensionals all over. I put Dimensionals around the back of the circle and put that over the stamped greeting so that the greeting is lined up the way that I want. Then I put the Dimensionals on the rest of the back, avoiding the stamped layer, and adhered it to the Early Espresso mat.
These extra steps aren’t hard, and I think that they add something special to the card. If you decide to try this card layout, please feel free to go simpler. Just because I like adding extra details doesn’t mean that simpler is not as good. It’s just different, and simple can be a great way to go!
